Residents and Councillors in Shoebury have raised concerns about the condition of a memorial dedicated to the memory of a late Shoeburyness Councillor.

The memorial park situated in the Shoebury Park was championed by local Shoebury Councillors following the death of Mike Assenheim who had served as Councillor for Shoeburyness. The maze was supposed to have served as a reminder of his passion for the residents of Shoeburyness but has now been left in a terrible condition which is due to be formally opened on the 30th August.

Shoebury resident Roger Hadley, who campaigned for the maze during his time as a Councillor said,

"It is a real shame that the council have allowed the condition of the maze to deteriorate. Mike Assenheim was a real champion of our area and we must remember the work he done. This maze could be an excellent tribute to him but unless the council is able to make it fit for purpose it will always will be a poor tribute indeed."

West Shoebury Councillor and Conservative Shadow Cabinet member for Culture and Tourism, Cllr Derek Jarvis said,

"We must get this memorial up to scratch as soon as possible. We understood it was to be a landscaped area with benches and tables for picnics. Right now the maze and the area surrounding it are full of weeds and looks as though the council has neglected it, this cannot continue if the memory of a hard working and passionate Councillor is to be tribute. I hope the council works as fast as possible to ensure that this is not only a great tribute to a great Councillor but also an excellent facility for our local community."
